Events in the South East of Ireland:
WIT and others in the region have arranged an amazing array of events on and around Fascination of Plants Day this year! All events are free and open to the public (the school events do need to be booked though as places are limited). All are running also as part of WIT's free festival exploring outdoor science – the Bealtaine Living Earth Festival. Booking for all events will open in mid-April.
Events on May 18th:
Fascination of Plants Day Guided Walk
10:00-11:30 (Primary 4th-6th class)
Venue: JFK Arboretum, New Ross
Fascination of Plants Day is an International movement celebrating
the importance of plants and their roles in our lives. This year JFK Arboretum
is helping to celebrate this important day by offering a guided walk which will
focus on the many and varied uses of plants in our daily lives, as well as
exploring the relationship which exists between plant life and wildlife in the
park.

Castlecomer Ecology Trail
10:00-11:00 (Secondary 1st-Transition Year)
Venue: Castlecomer Discovery Park
Students will be guided along one of the ecologically intriguing
woodland trails and will learn to identify and record a range of species.
Students will use pooters and beating trays to capture and release small
woodland invertebrates.

Fenor Bog Nature Trail
10:00-11:30 (Primary 5th & 6th class)
Venue: Fenor Bog, Fenor Village
An interactive walk covering the formation of the bog, looking at
the many plants and animals that live there.

Fascination of Plants Day Guided Walk
15:00-16:00 (General Public)
Venue: JFK Arboretum, New Ross
Celebrate Fascination of Plants Day with this guided walk for
adults that will explore many of the everyday uses of the plants present in the
park.

Brian Ború Eco-Heritage Talk
19:00-19:30 & 20:00-20:30

Venue: Waterford City Marina opposite Reginald’s Tower
Step aboard the Brian Ború, a 56 foot traditional sailing ship for
a talk about the fascinating biodiversity along the Waterford River Estuary.
Learn how this old fishing vessel was reclaimed and hear about upcoming eco
heritage discovery cruises throughout the summer. Places are limited so booking
is essential.

Medicinal Uses of Plants Eco-Walk

Guided walk focusing on the medicinal properties of the varied
plant life in the park. Why not come along and learn a little more about some
of the plants found in everyday life, many of which have hidden qualities.

Growing Your Own Food for a Healthy, Happy You
18.30-19.30 (Families/General Public)
Venue: Ardkeen Library, Waterford City
GIY Founder and author of “GROW COOK EAT” Michael Kelly will talk
about a typical growing year in his own garden in Dunmore East. Learn about the
GIY movement which was founded in Waterford in 2009 and now supports over
65,000 people annually who grow their own food at home, school or work.

our ancient woodlands.

and discover the secret lives of trees on a guided nature walk at Woodville
Walled Garden, Kilchreest. Local botanist, Janice Fuller, will lead the walk
through the bluebell woods at Woodville and will share some fascinating facts
about trees and woods.
Janice is the author of ‘Galway’s
Living Landscapes: Trees and Woodland’ (published by Galway County Council) and
copies will be available on the day.
All are
welcome. Entry €5 pp including light refreshments.
